Dazzling Brussels: The next stop on my summer 2010 backpacking trip

Brussels was a nice, relaxing stop during our European backpacking trip (June 16 - August 25th).  It was somewhat toward the end of our trip so we needed a few days to stop and taste, ehem...smell the chocolate.

If you are a lover of opulent architecture and have a fierce eye for detail you will love Brussels.  The architecture spans from medieval to post modern, which the jewel being the gothic Grand Place.

More architecture from around the city:

I still can't believe how many bikes are in this lot - look how far back they go!

Any of my lovely readers been to Brussels?

Thanks to wonderful future hubby for all of the fantastic photography he did during our trip!

From my trip to Europe - Amsterdam: A city of canals, bikes, bridges, and charming homes

It has been WAY to long since I've done a post on Chris and my 2010 summer backpacking around Europe.  I'm getting close to the end of our trip, but still have Belgium and France to cover.  Today I'm giving you a mini-tour of the charming streets of Amsterdam, undoubtedly one of the most popular destinations in Europe.  The brick row homes are really beautiful, although so many look like they are leaning against their neighbor or about to topple into the canal.  The canals are packed with house boats, and the stone streets with cyclists.

Just a typical city street...

Can you imagine living in a house on such a slant? Even with the leaning they are beautiful!

Like most European cities, eating outside at a cafe is the norm.

The food in Amsterdam was also superb.  Make sure to try the pancakes!

Hope you enjoyed this little tour!

Thanks to wonderful future hubby for all of the fantastic photography he did during our trip!

Backpacking around Europe: A few days in Berlin

Berlin is a city that's hard for me to describe because it is so rife with troubled history that is very visible throughout the entire city. At the same time, it is so beautiful, alive, and modern, and I'm unable to come up with the words to describe the city in any way to begin to shed light on all of it's qualities and characteristics.  The basics: it's the German capital and most populous city at 3.3 million.

So instead I'll share some of our moments there and leave you free to do your own research should anything pique your curiosity.

We stayed near the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church, with only the base of the spire left after a raid in 1943.

The beautiful Old National Gallery

Beautiful sculpture "Amazon on Horseback" by Louis Tuaillon outside the Neues Museum

Berlin Cathedral

Neptune fountain

Reichstag (German Parliament building)

Berlin Holocaust Memorial, Berlin - this is a quiet place not too close to other touristy attractions.  I remember it well.

The Berlin Wall is definitely a place I will always remember and sticks out in my mind very vividly. I was 5 when it fell and remember watching it in class.

Checkpoint Charlie the best known East - West crossing point during the Cold War.

Berlin is truly an amazing place on SO MANY levels.  Highly recommended in my book - you won't forget it.

Obviously, this photo is here just for comic relief - I can't decide if having a Haagen-Dazs right next to a ladies gym is genius or madness.

Thanks to wonderful future hubby for all of the fantastic photography he did during our trip!

Stunning Prague! More from my summer backpacking around Europe.

Oh amazing Prague.  Touristy, yes...but very much worth it.  The architecture and history is so inspiring.  It's the largest city of the Czech Republic, 14th largest in Europe, and historical center of Bohemia.  It's population is about 1.3million.

The lively and beautiful Old Town Square.

A view from the Charles Bridge, a big tourist spot in Prague.  It spans the  Vltava river.
All of the red rooftops are so beautiful.

One of the bridge towers of the Charles Bridge.

The gothic St. Vitus Cathedral

The Cathedral's exterior.

Sadly, the Golden Road was closed, and I had really wanted to see the tiny historical houses.

Beautiful facade's abound in Prague

Prague's Astronomical Clock was first installed in 1410.  It's the oldest one still working.

These pictures don't begin to give justice to the beauty of Prague.  Definitely put it toward the top of your list of places to visit!

My Summer in Europe - Budapest Part 2

If you saw my first post covering our trip in Budapest, you know how much I loved it. It is such an amazing city. There were so many photos I wanted to share that I had to break it up into two posts, so here goes again.

The Hungarian Parliament Building is one of Europe's oldest legislative buildings and the largest building in Hungary.

Aerial views from the top of St. Stephen's Basilica

A view of Castle Hill - you can see the top of Fisherman's Bastion

Along with my 10 week backpacking trip with my fiance Chris, I have also done traveling on my own to France and Italy.  Traveling alone is an enjoyable, albeit different experience than traveling with a friend.  Everything is on your scheduled and your preferences.  I think it's becoming more popular to take single vacations, as more and more places are advertising themselves to the lone traveler.

One of the highlights for me was the stunning, not-to-be-missed Matthias Church.  Unfortunately because of the bright spotlights from the ceiling, and our not-so-great camera, it was hard to capture the beautiful blue of the ceiling.

If you really like these you MUST go to 360 Cities where you can click and drag for a 360 degree, high res. view of the church

Here are some screen grabs from 360 cities.
