Office Space Eye Candy

Instead of a cork board to serve as a pinboard/inspiration board, clipboards are a great way to organize inspiration by project.  Your space is a little more limited on a clipboard, but it also makes your inspiration portable, and keeps your wall space from looking too cluttered (which always happens with my corkboard)

What is a must have in your office to stay on task and productive?

Chic and beautiful lighting

I am a sucker for a beautiful lighting fixture but am always very nervous when faced with having to commit to one.  There are so many and most cost a pretty penny, so I'm always worried I will regret a very expensive decision.  So ever since we moved into our new home in June I have been gathering inspiration for when we are ready to change our lighting (which is high on my priority list)  I've decided that to build my confidence, I am going to start with changing out the hallway light fixtures since they will be smaller and less expensive than a chandelier for above our dining room table or a pendant for the master bedroom. Although it might not seem that big of a deal, hallways are one of the most used light fixtures in a home and are often left on, so they shouldn't be neglected.

It's important when changing out something that's going to be around for a while, especially if you have a small budget like us, to think about the style and decor of the rest of your home so that they tie into the design you've already started or will work if you decide to change your flooring, wall color, etc.

Something a little more elegant and classy is a much better fit for this space. The mix of modern and historical is great match for the rest of the home decor. If the light fixtures were any more traditional and flashy than these I probably wouldn't like the space as much.

Something more artsy and eccentric stands out in this space but still fits in with the theme of the home. This is a great example of having something that catches your eye but doesn't take away from the space.

Mixing and matching may be the best idea for hallways that are connecting multiple rooms. This works well with eclectic styles but if done correctly you can mix and match any type of home decor style. Keeping the light fixtures in the same family or "collection" but in different styles is the best way to achieve this.

I'm really loving the look of drum style pendant lights in the hall.  The slim console with a lamp is a nice touch and adds a cozy feel.

Show Your Decor: Lisa D'Amato's Modern Nursery

Lisa just had her baby Daxel, and about 3 months ago Vanessa De Varges was hired to decorate her baby's nursery. Her and her husband live in a castle located in the Hollywood Hills - doesn't sound to shabby...

For the room Vanessa chose four basic colors red, gray, black and white - perfect for a little boys room! She wanted the room to have a modern feeling to it with out all the cutie baby stuff. This way the room can be used for years to come with out having to move things out or replace the look. She chose art that was more modern and vintage circus prints that they blew up and framed for the room. 

The walls are all black (its got a slight purple tone to it so its not too harsh on the eyes) and the ceiling and upper walls are painted bright white. Because she chose so many bright colors in the room and accents in white, including the rug, the room doesn't appear to look small, if anything her decorating tricks make the room feel bigger and more spacious. 

All the furniture, bedding and storage came from Land of Nod, the paint from Valspar and the flooring from Lumber Liquidators. The window treatments came from The ReRack Gals and the lighting came from Ikea (they did not donate), fabric from Premier Prints and most of the artwork came from different designers on Etsy were all sponsored for the Lisa's baby's room.

Timeless Inspiration

Finding that perfect piece of furniture to fit your space isn't always as easy as it seems. Luckily there are plenty of timeless iconic pieces that have been making statements and creating inspiration over the years.

A fool proof way to mix and match styles, and a tiny peak into my home

During the warmer months I don't spend a whole lot of time indoors, so once it gets chilly, my mind - an body, turn to my home and it's decor. It's the time of year when I swap out cushions, rugs, and throws, and give everything that's being packed away a good cleaning. Objects that stay out or don't get rotated - like furniture, get wiped down and I revaluate the room it's in or it's placement in a room. It's times like these that I'm always thankful that for bigger price tag items - I stick to the time-tested classics!

 For those who know me you know that my tastes change and vary. I don't necessarily like to stick to one particular style, but I like a transitional and eclectic look. One such classic in my home is my mid-century rocking chair. It gets compliments from almost everyone who walks in the door, and I got it in white so it can fit in anywhere I put it. Since I don't like all of my furniture and decor to be from one era alone, it's important to know your classics and basics from the various eras. There's a lot of great books and online resources that cover the classic furniture for each era - I like to refer to the One King's Lane resource page.

If you want to add some classics to your furniture collection, but not be a slave to a certain era or style, make sure you mix and match a bit.  I think rooms done all in mid-century modern can be a bit heavy on dark woods, drab fabrics, and primary colors. Here are some items I would mix in with my rocking chair to mix the look up a bit:

Warm inspiration as it starts to get cold

Now that the weather is starting to cool, I've been thinking about unpacking our winter throws, accent pillows, and down comforters. One of my favorite winter comforts is my faux fur throw. It adds luxe, glamour, and coziness to my sofa.

Winter is also a great time to swap out cotton and canvas pillows for textured pillows.  Mixing up different textures like mongolian lamb or yarn always looks inviting.

Pack up the linens and sheers for heavier velvet or silk drapes.  Not only do they look gorgeous, they will actually help keep the chill out from the windows.

Obviously visually warming up your space isn't enough to keep your home warm...as much as I love the old look of traditional radiators in a home, there are some pretty cool modern ones I'd never seen before!

I love that the one above doubles as a console as well! I would love to curl on the couch and read next that warm radiator! Some perks of these modern radiators? If you are looking to heat up a small space such as a bathroom or an office, you can use a low wattage radiator which can save you so much in price as well saving energy! They also are very quick to heat up unlike a heater which can take some time to get going and will cost you for all that extra time you have it running to get up to the desired temperature. Also if it is not a portable heater it has a very low risk of house fires which makes it a safer alternative.

Not to mention designer radiators are pretty cool looking these days! There are a ton of different styles, shapes, sizes, and colors to fit in with your home decor. For example, the one above also comes in yellow, brown, and blue!

If you still like the look of the older covered radiators you can just do a quick update to a more modern one that can save you space and be more efficient. In small spaces a smaller radiator can make a world of difference!

Vanity Eye Candy!

Every Monday could use some eye candy to start us off, right?! Lately I've been scoping out ideas for bathroom vanities.  Ours is soooorrrryyyy. It's chipping and cheap looking and I hate. Vanities are one of those things that should look great, because they are such a focal point of a bathroom, but also be functional because most of us need all the storage we can get in our bathrooms.

Finding the perfect vanity for your space is more than just picking out the style. Measure out how much space you have and find something that looks amazing but also fits in well with the rest of the room.  Consider what you will need to store in the vanity, and what you will be using it for.  Modern Bathroom is a great resource for finding a vanity that suits your needs.

Love the dark walls contrasting with the white and seriously considering this for our master or guest bath.

A little character in your choice is good! Even though most vanities come in white, brown, or black, mixing it up with a nice color can make any bathroom have a little more personality. A toned down color like the one below really makes this bathroom clean and crisp but also adds a little something extra to the space.
