Inspiring ways to use subway tiles

Sometimes the simplicity of subway tiles really makes me happy. They are simple, can be dressed up or dressed down, and always budget friendly. They are also a classic... but I'm interested to see what you think about them! Would you put subway tiles in your home?

Brick & Wood

Although I haven't been in the rustic mood lately sometimes I find a space that has brick and wood mixed together so perfectly, I could imagine falling in love with the space and living there. Here's a few reasons why I love the mix:

I'd love to curl up on that chair and take a nap in the sun

It looks so natural and with the natural materials brings the neutral colors which makes it easy to furnish however you like!

It can really be dressed up to look luxurious! You don't have to go rustic with it. There's something about mixing it with some high end materials can give it a very classy look.

tufted headboard...getting one of these in the future! and love the simplicity of the exposed brick and wood floors with large windows...id love that

Not a fan of the red brick? White washing is always an option. It still looks amazing and can add a little brightness to the room as well.

A beautiful transition between in and out...

Go all out with some great detail by mixing the brick and wood in the flooring! This look has so much character but it doesn't take away from the rest of the house either. I absolutely love it!

Inspiration for incorporating yard sale and flea market finds

Since it's the yard sale time of year, I thought I'd show you some inspiring ways to mix in those great flea sale and yard sale finds. It doesn't really matter what style decor you have.

The Art of Buying Original Art

Buying art can be a little more complicated than just falling in love with a piece and hanging it up! You may find that when you bring home that "gotta have it" piece that it doesn't fit in the space you want it in or it isn't great standing on it's own.

Here are a few hints to help with the buying process:

via houzz

If you can, visualize it before you buy it. Go shopping knowing what size wall you are trying to fill so you can get a feel for what size of piece of art you are looking for. Pick out a few colors that you know will work great in the room and if you have a specific color you are looking for bring an item that matches it so you can tie it all together.

Add Color with Art
via bhg

Buy local to support your local artists! Not only does this give the art you bring into your home a story worth telling but you are supporting your neighbors. It will give you another reason to love it!

Remove the anxiety around pricing and realize that you can find a great, good size piece of art for under $1,000 but even for $100. If you have a budget you need to stick to then keeping within that price is important but finding that perfect piece could be as simple as $50 and be priceless to you.

via housebeautiful

Use the tools you have! Now with the power of mobility we can take a picture of our space and bring it with us art shopping or take a picture of that piece and bring the picture home to see it works where you want it (not all places will allow that). There are also places online that will take a photo of you room and place pieces of art in it to see if it's a perfect match.

There is no better way to make your own than an original piece of art that provides originality and a great story when hosting your friends. If you are looking for ideas of places to shop there's an awesome place called Vango that makes this process so much easier! When in doubt, remember the golden rule: buy what you like.

Super small space inspiration

With my wedding and honeymoon coming up- we are going to Greece, I can't stop daydreaming about vacations and traveling which brought me the inspiration to show off some really cute RV's that prove you don't have to give up great decor just to be on the go. Granted, we are backpacking and using cars and ferries, but I thought these were worth a share anyway.  Have a great weekend!

On old school bus turned super awesome RV...unfortunately for it to save you any money you'd HAVE to convert it to bio-diesel.
Sometimes the most difficult small spaces are the most exciting to decorate. It can be a challenge but you will be forced to come up with more creative ideas.

I remember some of our best family trips were when we were crammed in a small space together. It's amazing what living simply can do for a relationship.

Taking A Minimalist Approach - clean and serene spaces

Sometimes I think we forget that simple can be just as beautiful as well decorated! With things so hectic in my life with the wedding right now, it's nice to see such simple, clean spaces.  Spring is also a great time to clear out clutter - so be a little more ruthless when you empty out those closets this season.

This office space really inspires me to clear mine out a bit.  Less "stuff" means less distractions and therefore better focus.

I don't think minimal has to mean bare, just well edited and thought out.  It also calls more attention to the objects you do display, so they can take center stage.

via House of Fifty

Minimal also doesn't need to be white, light, or neutral. It's all about lines and your ratio of positive and negative space.

It makes me want to pick a room and see what I can do with it to make it as clean and uncluttered as the ones featured here.  Once we get back from our honeymoon - I think I will start with my office!

Industrial Eye Candy - using just a dash or go all out

Spring is the time for cleaning out our homes and bringing in new fresh design. It's all the season of yard sales, festivals, and fairs which can bring some seriously great finds for your home! Here are a few ideas of what you can do with those industrial style finds:

I love the industrial style shelving here, even if you can only find the pipes there are plenty of tutorials on how to create your own shelving with them!

It could be something as simple as a light fixture that gives you a little extra in a room or some great baskets to use on open shelving.

The great thing about industrial finds is that they are great for mixing and matching. You don't necessarily need to have an industrial theme in order to make a piece fit into your decor. It can stand on it's own and look amazing.

New and pretty ways to use and hang your curtains

I saw this picture the other day and it made me think that there are probably a lot of other cool uses for curtains and drapes other than just hanging them in your windows.  Have you ever used drapes in a non-traditional way?
We have a heat pump in our bedroom, and I was thinking a treatment like the one above might be a nice way to hide it without impairing it's ability to function

No budget for that glamorous 4 poster or canopy bed?  Try installing drapery rods on the ceiling above your bed.

Fun Kitchen Projects

Making your kitchen your own can seem a little daunting since most homes come with the basic builder kitchen materials. Here are a few ideas to bring a little of your personality into your kitchen!

Picking unique door knobs and pulls is a great way to add a touch of you into your kitchen. I'm loving the sink faucet that goes with the rest of the pulls!

Changing out your back splash is a great way to add some character to your kitchen. There are so many different options these days that it's easier to have that unique look in your home and depending on the size of your kitchen, this could be an easy weekend project!

grey cabinets
via greigedesign

Go bold with color cabinets that contrast so great with the rest of the light tones in this home! Find a color you love since this is a much more time consuming project! A good test run would to be to paint one drawer or cabinet door to get a feel if you like it or not.

Colorful Kitchen Islands. LOVE this! and those pendant lights?? NEED!

Not interested in painting every cabinet in your kitchen? try just the island! I love the color of this one! I also like how they used the pop of grey on the hood range.

Another idea would to be paint the insides of the cabinet and add some glass doors. This is a great way to show off your best dishware and add another dimension to your kitchen!

Have fun bringing in a little more you into your home decor!

Unexpected ways to make your dining room chic and gorgeous

My dining room is one of those rooms that is visible from most other rooms in my home, so it's really important to me that it's easy on the eyes.  Here are some fabulous dining rooms, big and small that I would be more than happy to have as my own...

Dining room-by Meredith Heron The simple espresso-stained Parsons-style dining table can extend to seat up to 12 people. The plush upholstered end chairs and dining chairs are comfortable enough to sit in for hours, allowing guests to linger longer after dinner.
via homeremodelnote

Loving this clean and chic dining room.  It is small, just like mine, so how genius is the floor length mirror at one end of the dining table.  I will definitely be trying that trick.

I'm a big fan of bench or settee seating at the dining table. You can put a bench on just one side or on both.

via Lonny Mag

Feeling risky? Go all out and get full bench seating! I would still have two simple mix matching chairs to put on each end to maximize the seating in this space but I love the idea.

How cool is this bench?  And those blue velvet chairs?  The chandelier is often the conversation piece in a dining room, making the chairs the focal point is a nice change of pace.

I LOVE the idea of combining a library and a dining room.  I grew up in a family that often reads and eats at the same time ( I know, I know...not always a healthy environment for books)
