Inspiring white interiors

Used to be the pages of Decorology was always bursting with images of white interiors. While I still and probably will always love white interiors, my love of color has blossomed over time.  Nonetheless, I thought it would still be nice to pay homage to my first love, white interiors. Enjoy!

This would be such a nice bedroom for guests or a vacation home.

So pretty but with a pup and perpetually muddy backyard this white floor would always be covered in paw prints!

If I thought our current home was our forever home I would probably paint the cabinets white - because white kitchens are by far my favorite!

Chic and beautiful living spaces

In my house, the living room is the center of our house. Not only is it the first room you see when you walk in, it's the place where we spend the most time.  When our wedding is over and we have our lives back - the living room is second on my makeover list after my office.

LOVE the wall treatment in this space.  The crown molding and chandeliers mixed with the modern decor is really cool too.

Gold is very trendy right now, but I have to admit I'm smitten!

I love that this console isn't all about the TV!  Pretty accessories and a gallery wall distract from the TV.

I love the proportions of the furniture in this space - it's something I need to pay more attention too in my own house.

Feminine, glamorous interiors

Loving this pink and gold.  I don't know how much of this my sweetums would tolerate.

If only my dining room was ever this clean and serene.  It's being used as an office until Chris is finished with his masters, and promises that once he's done the table will always be clear.  Time will tell...

Make the most of a snow day with some of these projects

Four great ideas of things you can do to change your decor while your stuck inside (since we are snowed in with over a foot of snow here and it's still coming down!). Might as well have fun - and if you're like me I can only watch so much TV before I need to get up and do something!

1. Rearrange your furniture:
via BHG

I get so excited rearranging my furniture.  It is really refreshing and can make old things seem new again. It takes some trial and error to get things just right, and don't forget that you can "shop" furniture from the rest of your house!

2. Clean out your drawers:

Culinary Cleverness.  Small baking pans are just shallow enough to slide inside a desk drawer, and so perfect for avoiding clutter by keeping smaller office necessities from blending together in an useless pile.

In your kitchen, bathroom, pantry, bedroom, and more! Clean out those drawers by creating three boxes: throw away, give away, keep. Sort your items and when you get to the keep, figure out if you have any good trays, shoe boxes, or containers laying around that would keep the items corralled.  It looks like the drawer above is using small jelly roll pans, which is really clever.

3. Make that gallery wall you've dreaming about

I like Design Crush's tutorial, but there are a lot of great ideas and step by step instructions online i you just search for something like "create your own gallery wall."  Even i you don't have all the art you want to use yet, gallery walls can be flexible and expand over time, or you can at least decide where you want it and start composing it in kraft paper.

4. Style Your Bookshelves

You will be surprised how many compliments you get when you thoughtfully arrange your shelves.  Thinking of a bookcase or set of shelves as a composition really lets you show off your favorite accessories and books while also serving a purpose. I'm not going to lie, it's not always easy to strike that perfect balance, and you'll likely always be making little tweaks.  I would start by pulling a few images that I really like to use as a guide.  Next, collect the items that will be on the shelves.  You may have to omit some items or add some along the way.  You will want items with a variety of heights and widths.  Other than that, a lot of the process is just "feel."  Step back from the shelves from time to time to make sure you are happy with how your "composition" is taking shape.

Book Review: House Proud by Valorie Hart

House Proud: Unique Home Design, Louisiana is like a tour of some of the state's coolest, chicest homes.

A more articulate summary can be found at Amazon, where you can purchase the book:

"Experience the joy of decor and design, restoration and rebirth, color and comfort - all in the enchanting locale of Louisiana. A New Orleans-based interior designer, Valorie Hart expertly leads a private tour of the most fashionable homes in the state. Sara Essex Bradley's photographs document the personality of Louisiana's homes, from the formal Greek revival house to the warm Creole cottage, the pre-Civil war beauty to the kitschy 50s-style ranch, the grand Victorian to the modern urban loft. This is not simply a design inspiration book, but rather a thoughtful compilation of homeowners' personal stories of restoring and redesigning their dream houses - the stories of the "house-proud."

Here are some of my favorite photos, by Sara Essex Bradley.  I think her photography style was a perfect match for this project.

I LOVE this living room. The ceiling to floor hallway/art gallery, the fawn inspired rug, and the picture hung over the bookcase. I don't know why - I'm just a sucker for that.

The cypress ceilings are original to this home.  And check out the checkered floors.  Drool.

All in all, this book is a glamorous tribute to Louisiana homes, and even if you've never been, there's plenty of eye candy to be appreciated!

Colorful Home Decor

With the imminent gloom of winter on the way, I thought I'd seek out some color and light and some examples of what color can really do for your home. This is great for those who love white walls, live in rental that you can't paint, hate to paint, or just have a love for accessories and changing them up. Sometimes a blank white canvas of room is a little intimidating and you might even not know where to start. Bringing in simple neutral furniture is a great start so that it can grow with you while you figure out what you really want in your space. Then, observe what colors you are consistently drawn to, and seek out small home goods in those hues. Pillows, lamps, and vases are a great way to start.

Colors change with season and what's in style which goes the same with patterns. Instead of repainting all the time, try adding a little touch of color with some accessories and home decor around the house. This can give you that feel of color and texture that you might be looking for.

via House Beautiful

The great news with using home decor for your color is that it's really easy to switch it up. Add a bold cushion or curtain depending on the season...if it's a color you can't live with permanently, you can swap it out easily.

You can also do this with furniture pieces, like the blue table in the photo above. If you decided you didn't want blue anymore it would be a simple fix to change out just the side table and pillow. Another option would be to repaint that one piece! Since it's smaller it wouldn't be such a daunting task as repainting an entire room...

Want to go a little further than accessories for your room? You can frame wallpaper or paint a canvas to hang on the wall or bring in a spot color chair. When you want to change it up later you can switch out the chair to a different room or paint a new canvas.

You don't have to limit yourself - it might even be easier to switch out one piece like the rug to make the room look different. Don't be afraid to mix it up a little and make your room one that you love walking in to.

PURPLE

Lately I feel like I've been seeing purple everywhere. I feel like it's one of those colors you either love or hate. And I've been loving it. What about you?

I've been dying to try a high gloss ceiling.  Maybe in our dining room.
